Outcomes

Content

Learners can talk about Theseus, the ancient Greek hero, as well as learn about his childhood, his journey to Athens, his fight with the Minotaur and his becoming a king of Athens.

Language

Learners can use the verbs “to be”, “have got” and “can”, as well as the Present Simple Tense, to talk about Theseus; in addition, they can practise descriptive adjectives (e.g. strong, tall, well-built etc.).

Learning skill

Learners can work cooperatively in groups of four (4).

Personal aim

Want to try out open pair/group feedback technique when checking some activities.

Educational aims

Students study and learn vocabulary items related to Theseus and his life, then use this knowledge to create their own material (both oral and written; drawing is also included)

Timetable fit

This is the third in a series of units, dealing with the ancient Greek hero Theseus.

Group profile

There are 26 students in class, 13 boys and 13 girls.

Duration

Three (3) teaching hours [45 minutes each]

Assumptions

Students are pre-elementary (A1) level English learners. They don’t have enough of the key vocabulary to discuss mythology and their writing is imprecise therefore needs work.

Anticipated problems and solutions

Learners may be unsure of some key vocabulary in the presented videos; therefore a brainstorming activity at the beginning as well as a powerpoint presentation to follow, together with related language games, will facilitate learning.

Materials

History Student’s Book, Blank sheets (A4) Worksheets, Videos, Computer, Whiteboard, Projector
